In 2020, celebrated Israeli bass player Avishai Cohen turned 50 and planned to celebrate his birthday with 50 concerts in 50 countries. The pandemic ruined his plans, so his anniversary and promotion tour for his latest album, Arvoles (2019), had to be postponed for this year. Garana Jazz Festival is happy to host, in 2021, the concert of one of the most loved musicians of the audience in Wolf’s Meadow. In an interview a few years back he said, almost as a premonition of the current situation: “in our lives, music can be a form of salvation. At least, that’s what it has always been for me”.

Adventurous and always surprising, at the start of his career, Avishai Cohen was part of Chick Corea’s New Trio and a a co-founder of the Origin ensemble. After a 6-year “apprenticeship” he continued his career on his own, incorporating the traditions of Sephardic music, flamenco and Afro-Cuban rhythms into his creations. His interpretative style, his compositions and his openness were soon appreciated and loved. His discography includes 17 albums as leader. thousands of concerts and a very dedicated audience. In 2013 he received the Echo Jazz award for his album Duende. DownBeat Magazine named him a “a jazz visionary of global proportions” and Bass Player Magazine included him in the top 100 most influential bass players of the 20th century.
