O surprising encounter between Argentina and Japon at the frontier of jazz
The burning and intense character of Argentinian music, mixed with the refinement of the traditional Japanese music fuels this exceptional quarter, created by the combination of two major symbols of Japanese jazz Aska Kaneko and Tomohiro Yahiro – and two of the most inventive Argentinian musicians – Gerardo Di Giusto and Carlos Buschini.
The magnificent virtuosity of violonist Aska Kaneko – a star in her native Japan – is accompanied by the sophisticated and colourful compositions of pianist Gerardo Di Giusto. The rhythms created and woven as a conversation between bass player Carlos Buschini and drummer Yahiro Tomohiro are perfectly harmonised with the other half of the quartet. The four musicians take the art improvisation to a totally new level, beyond all predictable formulas. In fact, they model a new style of music. And yet, the natural alegance of their music makes them sound surprisingly familiar.
Gaia Cuatro was born 2004, taking to the stage all over the world. The artists have recorded 5 albums together. The latest three, Haruka (2010), Kaze (2015) and Lucrecia (2020), featured renown Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu as a guest.
