Legendary saxophone player Charles Lloyd returns to Gărâna Jazz Festival with The Marvels, alongside celebrated guitar player Bill Frisell, on the first day of the festival, Thursday, 7th July 2022. The two artists have played at Garana twice before, with their own projects: Charles Lloyd in 2008 and 2013 and Bill Frisell in 2013 and 2017. The 26th edition showcases them for the third time this time together, for an unforgettable concert.
Their collaboration, entitled The Marvels produced numerous concerts and three recordings: I long to see you (2016, Blue Note), Vanished Garden (2018, Blue Note, with Lucinda Williams) and Tone Poem (2021, Blue Note). The Marvels also feature: Greg Leisz (slide guitar), Reuben Rogers (double bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums).
Over the past five decades, Charles Lloyd played post-bop, brought world music influences into jazz and marked the psychedelic 60s with avant-garde improvisation. Lloyd was one of the first jazz musicians to sell a million copies of a recording (“Forest Flower” – recording of the 1966 Monterey concert with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Cecil McBee). He then surprised everyone by withdrawing from the public eye just as he became a jazz superstar. After his comeback to the jazz scene, he recorded numerous albums with ECM and Blue note, received his PhD in music and was awarded multiple international prizes. What makes his truly an incontestable star is his warm and passionate music that never fails to touch the souls of its listeners.
