Dedicated to a land shaped by centuries of migration and belonging, MOTHERLAND is a project born from Transylvania’s deep multicultural heritage. Created by the MINDTHEGAP Trio in collaboration with the FLOW. String Quartet in Târgu Mureș, MOTHERLAND weaves jazz fusion and electronic soundscapes with the neo-classical depth of the string quartet, building a complex sensory experience that brings together the region’s cultural diversity and a contemporary language that traverses jazz and folk influences in acoustic arrangements.
The project took shape in the summer of 2024 and was presented for the first time that fall in a remarkable concert held at the Fortified Church in Biertan. The project’s music is based on compositions by the MINDTHEGAP Trio, adapted and orchestrated for string quartet by Alex Cioată.
“MOTHERLAND speaks of our heritage, of our roots, and of the artistic spirit we have received here in Transylvania. Whether we’re performing themes from local folklore or drawing on influences from world music, that wandering, almost nomadic spirit that exists within us is naturally expressed in the sound that makes us feel we belong to this place,” says Ștefan Ormenișan.
