Per ,,Viking” Mathisen Trio
(Norvegia, Cehia, Israel)

8 July 2023

Main Stage, Poiana Lupului, Gărâna

Per Mathisen – bass
Utsi Zimring – drums
Daniel Bulatkin – piano

This exciting new international project consists of a seasoned rhythm section: Norwegian bassist Per Mathisen & Israeli drummer Utsi Zimring; and a new discovery on the Czech jazz scene – young lion Daniel Bulatkin.

The qualities of the Mathisen-Zimring rhythm section are proven by the long list of world-renowned jazz stars that have been accompanied by it over the years – for example Ulf Wakenius (Oscar Peterson, Michael Brecker); Mike Stern (Billy Cobham, Miles Davis); Dave Kikoski (Grammy award winner for an album with the Mingus Big Band) and many others. The last musician mentioned – Dave Kikoski – has released a very critically acclaimed album with Mathisen and Zimring in 2016 called „New York City Magic” at the European label Alessa Records.

This ensemble mainly presents original compositions of all its members, which oscillates on the edges of modern mainstream jazz (with elements of world music) & high-energy fusion – the classical acoustic trio paradigm and modern electric bands. The repertoire is topped off with creatively arranged jazz standards from the post-bop period. Daniel Bulatkin is a 20-year-old jazz pianist of Russian origin based in Prague, CZE. He is considered to be the youngest prodigy on the Czech jazz scene. Over the course of his very short career, he has become one of the most sought-after sidemen on the scene, be it on piano or the hammond organ. Collaborations: Tineke Postma (2x Grammy), Justin Faulkner, Ulf Wakenius, Gary Husband, Gergo Borlai, Martin Valihora, and Czech stars such as Martina Bárta, Yvonne Sanchez, Robert Balzar and others… Per Mathisen, also known as the “Bass Viking”, is considered to be the Norwegian response to world-class virtuosos of the instrument such as double-bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen or bass-guitarist Jaco Pastorius, thanks to his impressive instrumental prowess and especially his very unique sound. He is best known for his collaborations with some of the most respected jazz artists in the world; for example Bill Evans, Terri Lyne Carrington, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Alex Acuňa, Geri Allen, Bill Bruford, Terje Rypdal, Jacob Collier, Antonio Sánchez, Jojo Mayer, Keith Carlock and many more. Utsi Zimring is a composer and virtuoso drummer from Israel, residing mostly in New York City, USA. Since his 12 years of age, he has performed as sideman in many local bands across the genres. To date, he has recorded over 100 CDs with these bands. In the year 1998 he founded the fusion band Zonzee, with which he performed all over the world as representative of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With this project he also performed at the legendary NYC jazz club – the Blue Note. He relocated to New York for several years and there he recorded his critically acclaimed debut album Zone 23, which features jazz stars, such as Dave Kikoski, Mike Stern or Bob Franceschini.
