Sunday, July 14th, the last day of the 23rd edition of Garana Jazz Festival, will be a full day – full of the joy of a jazz vacation in the mountains with friends and full of musical discoveries that will be talked about for years to come. The bands announced for the day, Moshulu and John Surman Trio, will be joined by Maciej Obara Quartet. A European jazz experience that brings us closer to the energy of Polish artists, represented so well in the same place, in previous years by Pink Freud and Adam Bałdych.
Polish saxophone player Maciej Obara won his acclaim on the international jazz scene in 2006 when he won the Bielska Zadymka Jazz Contest. In 2008 he is invited by the famous trumpet player Tomasz Stańko to join two projects: “New Balladyna Quartet” and “Terminal 7”. He collaborated with many American musicians and recorded two albums with John Lindberg and Harvey Sorgen, and with Ralph Alessi, Mark Helias and Nasheet Waits. Over the years, Obara has developed an unmistakable musical language and, even though he collaborated with various artists from Japan, U.S.A. and Europe, his main focus has remained the quartet founded in 2012 with Haavard Skarpnes Wiik (piano) and the two Norwegian musicians: Ole Morten Vågan (bass) and Jon Falt (drums). This is also the creative formula that we will have the pleasure of meeting on July 14th, at Gărâna Jazz Festival 2019.
In the Wolf’s Meadow we will discover UNLOVED, Maciej Obara Quartet’s most recent album, released with ECM Records. “Unloved”, the quartet’s first studio recording, is liberty and intuition, a testimonial of the group’s leader, Maciej Obara, inspired by people and places that have had an impact on him over the years. This is a musical project that acknowledges the influence of the masters of Polish jazz and embraces the openness characteristic for Scandinavian jazz. “Unloved” stands out through the sensitive harmonies of Dominik Wania, the virtuosity of Ole Morten Vågan and the experiments of Gard Nilssen. Maciej Obara Quartet creates a musical universe both lyrical and full of energy that does not lack a passion for improvisation.
